Heading to Comerica Park to see the Tiger’s play this month? Make sure you take along the sunblock—and don’t forget the feet! With so much publicity about the risks of skin cancer Americans are slathering on their favorite lotion. However, the feet are often forgotten. If you’ve ever experienced a burn on the tops of your feet, you know that agony can result—especially when you have to put on your shoes!
Pain is the short-term reason for applying sunblock, but the risk of developing skin cancer can have long-term consequences. Feet are often overlooked in regards to cancer, but the dangers are real. What may appear to be a blemish, could be more significant. The feet should be inspected along with the rest of the body—even the soles. Don’t ignore a spot that wasn’t there before, or an area that changes color or shape. Skin cancer on the feet can be deadly, so don’t delay if you suspect a problem.
Remember that not all sunscreen is created equally. Check out the SPF number on the label. The higher the rating, the more protection that is provided. Even though there are waterproof products, you should reapply often when swimming. If you have sensitive skin, check out lotions that are formulated to be hypoallergenic.
